We have been hibernating all winter, but warm weather is just around the corner! It is fitting that our first gig for this year was at Sears. With a big Friends and Family sale in the works, Sears manager Julie asked us to set up for the day. As usual, the weather didn't exactly cooperate. It was windy and COLD. But that did not stop people from coming out for mini donuts. It is so nice when you hear about how much you've been missed all winter. We sold to lots of repeat customers and made as some new fans as well. Thank you Julie for having us. Today, we secured a spot at the monthly car show in Livingston. It is held on the second Saturday of each month from April thru October. We will be there serving up hot fresh mini donuts and cups of southern sweet tea. I will be updating more about our summer schedule in the coming weeks. I hope to get to meet more of you this season. We love our mini donut fans!
I have discovered the world of Munzee hunting. What are Munzee you ask? Well, so did my husband. What the heck are Munzee??? Munzee are nothing more than barcodes which can be printed or ordered and placed in any location anywhere. ANY LOCATION ANYWHERE! Taylors reply to this was “Cool, you can do that while you are traveling across the country in your RV”. My thoughts exactly!
You start by downloading the Munzee app to your mobile device. The app includes a map and uses GPS to help you locate Munzee in your area. The Munzee can be placed on light poles, under park benches, inside businesses, just anywhere. Most of them contain some sort of hint and you can comment your own experience with each Munzee. When you locate your Munzee, you then capture it by scanning it with your phone. You get points for your captures. However, I haven’t yet figured out what you can do with those points.
It turns out, there are a ton of Munzee right here where we live. I cant wait to get started capturing them and look forward to seeing where the hunt takes us!
Do you hunt Munzee? If so, feel free to tell us about your experiences in the comments below. Happy hunting!
Last year we were asked by the Sears manager to come set up in the parking lot during Black Friday and sell donuts, coffee, hot chocolate and hot dogs to the hoards of hungry shoppers that would be out all night looking for great deals. I must admit, I have never been a Black Friday shopper. I have heard the horror stories on the news and from friends, but this was my first experience. I was amazed at the number of people who came. The lines would begin to form at each store hours before opening time and during that time, we sold hot drinks and fresh hot donuts to those shoppers.
This year, temps dropped down into the teens overnight. Guess what? That did not stop them! Still they came. We were set up on Thursday by 6pm. Sears was the first store to open at 8pm. We were barely able to get things ready to go before we had a line waiting to get coffee and donuts. The plan was for me to leave around midnight, take Taylor home and get some sleep so I could go back early Friday and relieve Danny and Morgan. At 2am, we still had not stopped selling long enough for me to leave. Instead I bundled up in the back of the van in the parking lot and slept for a few hours there.
After freshening up a little in the bathroom at Sears, I was ready to go again and Danny took my spot in the van. Again, we went all morning. We planned to start tearing down our setup at noon, but the shoppers wouldn’t have it! They kept coming for more and more mini donuts. By 1pm we were all so tired we couldn’t go anymore. Danny and I had gotten very little sleep and Morgan was running on even less! We started our teardown. We had a man and his young son come by and say darn, we looked forward to mini donuts today L The worst was a man with his little girl who walked up. Danny said he was sorry, but we were done for the day. The little girl dropped her head and started to cry.
We feel very grateful for all the support we have been shown over the last 2 years. We have met countless people and formed relationships through this business. We have helped groups raise money and provided food for various events. We are still focused on our dream of traveling the country mini donut style. With a plan to visit every state park in the United States and attend as many festivals as we are able, we will stay busy right up to retirement.
Thank you to all our Grams Mini Donut fans. We love and appreciate all of you! As our season winds down for this year, we will be focusing on 2014. We can’t wait to see what exciting adventures wait for us there. Thank you!!
We have made the decision to visit every state park in the United States as part of our travel plan! The best part about this plan is that we live in Middle Tennessee. There are over 30 state parks right in our back yard! We won't have to wait until we go full time to start meeting our goal. We can spend our weekends visiting the parks in our area.
I found a really cool Pinterest board that lets you map the places you want to visit. This will be very helpful in giving us a visual of all the state parks in our area. I think this will help to keep us on track of our goal.
I am now in search of a printable list of all the State Parks in the United States. I would like to have a master list, broken down into states that I can use to check off as we visit each park. If anyone has any suggestions on compiling this list, please feel free to comment below. I am open to any advice out there!
Welcome to Grams first blog post! Let me start this with a little background. My husband Danny and I started Grams Mini Donuts with a huge goal in mind. We both want to travel full time one day. Yup, that's right. We want to buy an rv, sell our house and travel the United States until we are no longer physically able. In order to do this, we have to have an income. As much as we would like to go on permanent vacation, we will still have to find a way to get paid. That's where Grams comes in. We started a mini donut business in hopes that one day, we can travel the country spreading mini donut goodness as we go. Our target date as of now is June, 2017. That sounds like a long way off, but there are so many things that will have to come together before then. I plan to use this blog to keep me on track. This is where I will post our goals, plan our journey and create a place of accountability. If you are reading this, please feel free to comment. We welcome questions, feedback and any experiences you would like to share. Let the journey begin!
